Labeling wine as a “healthy” beverage has stirred up a hornet’s nest recently of vocal objection and indignation.
Although the research is well-documented that drinking a glass of red wine provides antioxidants and can help protect against heart disease and inflammation, the marketing efforts of various “clean” wine brands have associated wine with wellness and fitness trends, attempting to attract consumers looking for a healthier lifestyle that includes transparency around ingredients in what they eat and drink.
That transparency, or lack thereof, is at the center of the hornet’s nest and the enduring controversy it stirs up on opposing sides.
What is undeniable, however, is the growing consumer interest in better lifestyle options, and that includes better options around wine.
The tasting notes you’ll find in this article are not the tasting notes you might be used to hearing. Rather than the heavy, serious, pretentious words that are often associated with tasting notes and wine descriptions, I’d like to focus instead on some words that winemakers actually use when they’re talking about each other’s wines.
